EXCITING BIODIVERSITY PROJECT, TODMORDEN HIGH SCHOOL

Tony Mulgrew, catering manager at Todmorden High School, is initiating an exciting biodiversity project at the High School, with the support of his Headteacher and Todmorden in Bloom.

As a chef, running an allotment at home is a natural part of life for Tony, where he grows vegetables and herbs for the table. When he first took up his post at the school he noticed that there appeared to be surplus land within sight of the school dining room windows, and this observation gave birth to an idea: perhaps some land could be utilised for growing fresh vegetables? This could complement beautifully his  projects aimed at improving school meals take-up.

Pictured here is the slightly 'grot spot' appearance of Tony's proposed site as stands now. He aims to have wonderful vegetables growing there next term!

Tony's vision is to construct three raised beds:

One to be managed by students at the High School itself; another managed by a local primary school; and the third by senior members of the community.

Tony and the school head both recognise and value the richness of experience that the older generation could bring  to such a project.  Students and parents alike could gain a wealth of knowledge from the very experienced gardener, who in turn is likely to possess reserves of patience the younger adult may lack.  Tony feels that such a relationship with older members of the community could engender greater respect from students when they meet this generation around town, as they would perhaps appreciate more what the older generation is about with support from the Community Foundation, the site will be cleared and the raised beds built, together with ramps etc, providing full wheelchair access. Obviously the detailed planning and contracting process takes time, but watch out for further news!

Biodiversity plans include surrounding such an area with a dry stone wall, and to include a pond and trees.  I hope he will also emphasise the need to include fruit trees and bee-attracting plants, as pollinating bees are so essential to our eco-system.Tony, realises that he now needs to enthuse and encourage staff and parents in embracing the concept of links with the local community, changing hearts and minds in order to work together for the benefit of our town.  They are determined to bring flagship status to the school, both in Calderdale and beyond!
