THE PRESSURE'S
ON!
Don't forget that your 'Bloom' team is applying for a
'Bloomin' Wild' Biodiversity Discretionary Award this year,
so get your thinking caps on - what can you do?
There's an amazing example of what it is possible to achieve
in a garden high up on the fringes of Todmorden.
It has been deliberately planned to become a mosaic of
habitats, taking into account aspects of sun, shade and wind
direction. The owner's long term management strategy is to
protect the main habitat types already there, such as
woodland & heather hillsides, and work with them to improve
diversity. It's not only a garden but a nature reserve!
In the vegetable patch some areas of bramble have been left
for the wildlife that rely on it. A mix of native and non
native high nectar plants have also been planted here to
encourage hoverflies and bees to aid pollination.
Throughout the garden wildlife corridors are being created
consisting of native perennials such as broom, dog-violet,
great woodrush, bluebells and wood avens to connect habitat
areas.
