Stacey McCarthy and Lea Stock are now helping Matt Harrow with the gardening club at Ferney Lee School.

So far sixteen very enthusiastic budding gardeners  have planted extra early potatoes in big tubs indoors,

sowed peas(lots of the  children are growing them at home as well),
and have today planted out small pea and broad bean plants in the vegetable garden.

There are lots of interesting projects underway in the Wild Garden at Ferney Lee,

including planting up a mini wild-meadow,

taking lots of buddleia cuttings for the butterflies and the establishing of a fruit orchard.

There will soon be a webcam link set up from the bird-box camera.

Ferney Lee are having a big front-garden clearing day next week on Friday 23rd  March (9.30 onwards)  - volunteers would be very welcome - if possible please bring gardeneng tools - but we do have some on site.

Update

The clearing day went well at Ferney Lee - broken fork prongs and stiff backs the following day notwithstanding.  Thanks to all who helped out - in particular to Gill Osborne (professional gardener), Peter Brown (school governor) and the lads from Todmorden High.  Planting up to follow soon!

We have started clearing another area at the front of the school which we are hoping to turn into a butterfly and moth bar - growing all their favourite nectar rich blooms.

April 18th -  our seedlings have been growing during the holidays and the school caretaker has been kept busy watering them.    Today the gardening club planted out our chitted potatoes.

We now have a coldframe where we can harden off our young plants - today we filled it with wildflowers kindly donated by Stuart Elwin of the Calderdale Parks Department.
