20 Mar 2008 - Pub pennies bloom into pounds
By Staff Copy
EVERY penny helps...and Todmorden In Bloom volunteers are delighted with staff and customers at a Todmorden hostelry who have been chipping in with pennies to help raise funds.
Licensee of the Golden Lion, Mr Michael Durkin, said staff had been encouraging customers to support Todmorden In Bloom and had put a collection box in place.
Now, with spring on the doorstep and planting beginning in earnest, Michael and his staff have been able to present more than £475 to the bloom volunteers.
Michael said that an attractive town was more enjoyable to visitors and he and his staff wanted to do their bit.
One of the bloom volunteers, Mary Clear, said people's support was crucial. "Without the help from Todmorden folk we just could not keep the standard up. Every penny goes into the town. We would love to be self sufficient and not have to go for grants - if other businesses followed Michael's lead we could have money boxes all over town. Those pennies can soon add up."
Local resident Francis Boocock is willing to visit any business in Todmorden to supply money boxes and arrange banking. He can be contacted on 01706 812363. He said: "This is my chance to support the group. I might even get a league going!"
